Longtime Assistant Gets His Shot

Many times the nickname "Coach" will stick with a person for much of a lifetime. Such is the case with the new head coach of the Washington State Cougars football program, Bill Doba, '62.

Doba, who was the Ball State Alumnus Football Coach of the Year in 1972 and 1974 while head coach at Mishawaka High School, has been coaching football for five decades. A football player himself until he injured his hip during his sophomore year at Ball State, Doba now finds himself the head coach of one of the best football programs in the nation. His chance to be a head coach again comes 27 years after he was at the helm of Mishawaka's team. After 14 years as head assistant to Mike Price at Washington State, Doba finally got his chance to be the head coach in December after Price's departure.

Pullman, WA is a long way from South Bend where Doba grew up. He can remember that, as a child, he and some of his friends would throw snowballs at the "Ra Ra Boys," Notre Dame's football players. Instead of dreaming of playing or coaching at Notre Dame, Doba wanted to leave South Bend. When a coach took him to see the Ball State campus while competing at a nearby track meet, Doba fell in love with the school. "Ball State is a great place," he says.

While at Ball State, Doba was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. That gave him the opportunity to meet people and make friendships, which he still has today.

Ball State also is where Doba met Judy (Claycomb), '62. They married the day before their graduation.

Doba is very excited about his team's chances in the PAC-10 next season. "We have two goals at Washington State: to graduate all of our seniors and win the Rose Bowl," he says.

With a young nucleus of players and a solid coaching staff, Doba expects to achieve his goals for the program.

There is no doubt that Doba has paid his dues in coaching and now has a fantastic opportunity with his Cougar program. Though there is a lot of work ahead, Doba thrives on it. "The fun part is winning and walking off the field a winner," he says.

Doba plans to coach as long as it remains fun. For this Ball State alumnus there is no end in sight. Football has been a good part of his life for a very long time.

From Goshen to Pullman, Doba's coaching career has taken him to many different places, but he is right at home in Pullman and at Washington State. "I think that Washington State is a great place to be," says Doba. "I love living in Pullman."

Rollin Gill Doesn't Stop Cheering

Rollin Gill, '51MA56, never misses a Ball State football game and attends most of the men's basketball and baseball games. It isn't just a love of sports that has kept him coming back after all these years; it is a love of Ball State. "It is just a great school," he says.

Gill enrolled at Ball State as a non-traditional student with two young children and a wife at home. He continued his employment at Warner Gear factory in Muncie while working on his bachelor's degree in education. Upon graduation, Gill promptly quit Warner Gear to pursue a career in teaching.

Because of his busy home life, Gill never had the opportunity to get involved in organizations while a student at Ball State, but he always found time to be involved with athletics. He loved to play sports, especially football and softball, and would often attend the sporting events on campus. "I love sports of all kinds," he confirms.

One particular sport for which Gill houses a passion is bowling. He began bowling at the age of 24 when a friend asked him to participate and Gill has been bowling ever since. His skill and expertise of the game has earned him accolades from the Muncie community. In 1973 he was inducted into the Muncie Bowling Hall of Fame. That is topped by his induction into the Delaware County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984, attributed not only to his bowling expertise, but also to his involvement in basketball and softball. Last year the Civic Bowling League awarded Gill the first-ever Bowler of the Year Award. "It was quite a shock," he says.

Gill always has been an active person, and his retirement from the Muncie Trade School in 1981 didn't change that. In addition to spending more quality time with his wife of 61 years, Gill took on more community roles and started bowling in more leagues. "I don't like to sit around," he says. Gill currently bowls on three leagues, and spends almost eight hours a week improving his game. He has yet to bowl a perfect 300, but came close once with a 290. In addition to that he is a member of Cardinal Varsity Club, Ball State's athletic booster organization, served on the Class of 1951 50-year reunion committee, and attends sporting events at his high school alma mater, Muncie Central.

Of his involvement with Ball State, Gill states, "It has done so much for me." He has enjoyed watching the campus grow and change over the years and likes to reminisce with friends about the 'good old days.'

Gill doesn't anticipate that his involvement with the campus will dwindle and looks forward to many more good games to come. "I just love Ball State!" he says.
