Alumni Association Makes Staff Changes

The Alumni Association has hired a new employee and appointed a current employee to a new position.

Beth Olinger, '93, is the new assistant director/special events and Kate Webber, '98MA99, has been promoted to assistant director/outreach. The changes were effective January 6.

Olinger has eight years of experience in sales and marketing, most recently with Interactive Intelligence, Inc., in Indianapolis. She will be the advisor to the Homecoming Steering Committee and Greek letter alumni programs in addition to serving as a co-liaison to the College of Business Alumni Society.

Olinger will work with alumni in outreach activities in southern Indiana, Madison and Henry counties, and the Cincinnati, OH area. She also will coordinate special events with alumni in businesses and corporations.

Webber has been the Alumni Association's information coordinator since April 2001. Her new responsibilities will include acting as the advisor to the Student Alumni Relations Team (StART), and associate advisor to the Homecoming Steering Committee, coordinating Graduate Of the Last decade (GOLD) and Coach of the Year awards, and serving as co-liaison with the College of Fine Arts Alumni Society.

Webber also will work with alumni in northern Indiana and the Chicago, IL area. She will coordinate data requests from the campus community and provide assistance with technology and Internet usage within the Alumni Association.

Club Offers Events To Northeastern Alumni

Northeastern Indiana: Area alumni gathered February 21 at Columbia Street West in Fort Wayne for the annual TGIF party. Free hors d'oeuvres, door prizes, and entertainment were provided.

Professional Groups Schedule Gatherings

Many events have been planned for the professional alumni groups this spring.

COB: The College of Business Alumni board is scheduled to meet in the Whitinger Building at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, April 10.

COFA: The College of Fine Arts Alumni Society will host a reception and jazz concert, Friday, April 9. Featuring Larry McWilliams and the jazz lab ensemble, the Juicey Jazz concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Pruis Hall. Ed Thigpen will be the guest drummer for the event.

The board will meet Tuesday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Alumni Center.

FCS: The Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni board is co-sponsoring a spring symposium with the department, Thursday, April 3 at the Alumni Center. Penny Ralston, '71, dean at Florida State University, will be the keynote presenter.

FCS faculty will have brief presentations and displays prior to Ralston's speech. Alumni and guests are invited to attend the presentations, and a reception and alumni award dinner.

Journalism: Three alumni will be honored for their achievements during the annual Journalism Award luncheon Wednesday, April 2, on campus.

Attila Schillinger, MA95, has been selected as the Outstanding Young Alumnus; Karen Garloch, '73, will receive the Outstanding Alumni Award; and Jan Clark, '63MA70, will be inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame.

Schillinger is managing director for Germany's Operations of Waggener Edstrom Strategic Communications, the world's largest independent technology public relations firm, where he oversees a staff of 13.

Garloch is a medical writer for the Charlotte Observer, where she has worked since 1987. An award-winning journalist, Garloch received a Pulitzer Prize nomination for a story she authored in 2001.

Clark will close a more-than-40-year career in sports writing when he retires this July from the Richmond Palladium-Item. In addition to numerous Best of Gannett awards, Clark has been honored by the Indiana Basketball Association, the High School Press Association, and the Hoosier State Press Association.

The Journalism Alumni board continues planning a reunion for alumni of all student media programs at Ball State. It will be hosted Saturday, June 21, at the Alumni Center and the Art and Journalism Building. Details will be mailed. Former editors are being sought for ideas.

The group also is planning an event for Chicago-area alumni in August.

The board will meet April 2, following the awards luncheon.

Nursing: The Class of 1953 50-year nursing class reunion will be hosted Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, at the Alumni Center.

The Nursing Alumni banquet will be Saturday evening. During the event, 2003 Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award recipients Beth Kelsey, '82MA86MS96, and A. Marie (Clark) Osborn, '53, will be honored.

A reservation form will be included in the group's spring newsletter, with reservations due by Friday, April 11.

NREM: The Natural Resources and Environmental Management Alumni Society will host an alumni awards dinner, Friday, April 11. Alumni are invited to make reservations for the event, which will honor NREM graduate Sam Carman, MS78, for outstanding contributions in the profession.

Constituent Societies Host Several Events

The Cardinal Football Alliance and Black Alumni Society offer numerous events and activities for alumni to participate in throughout the year.

CFA: Friday, February 21, the Cardinal Football Alliance (CFA) hosted a reception for lettermen to meet new head football coach Brady Hoke, '82.

The CFA board of directors includes: president, Craig Kantner, '88; vice president, Jamie Ashton, '88; Alumni Council representative, Ron Duncan, '88; and Alumni Association staff members, Edwin D. Shipley, '68MA71; and Tracy Curry, '89MA98.

Other board members include: Brady Hoke, '82; Brennen Baker, '89; Aaron Gralak, '97; Brian Outlaw, '89; David Scheller, '82; Don Kaczmarek, '88; Eric Scherrer, '77; Henry Hall, '93; Marc Martin, '90; and Steve Midkiff, '68.

CFA, was formed in May 2002 to serve and promote camaraderie among Ball State football lettermen.

Black Alumni: The Black Alumni board will begin its August reunion with mini-reunions, Friday, August 1. Members of all black sororities, fraternities, and any independents will meet with others from their organizations for a luncheon, followed by social or meeting gatherings in the afternoon.

Eugene White, EdS81EdD82, will be the keynote speaker. The reunion will continue through Sunday, August 3. Reservation details will be mailed.

Post-Its

Class of 1953 Reunion: Members of the Class of 1953 will meet for their 50th class reunion, Thursday and Friday, June 19-20, at the Alumni Center. Those attending will be inducted into the BSU Half-Century Club Saturday evening and will receive pins and certificates.

Ball Building Tour: Alumni who work in the E.F. Ball building on campus are invited to a "sneak preview" of structure renovations. The Alumni Association and the Department of Telecommunications are co-sponsoring the event Tuesday,

April 1 from noon to 1:00 p.m., starting in the faculty-staff lounge. Tours will be provided by the Center for Media Design, telecommunications, CICS, and WIPB.

Cardinal Job Fair: The annual Cardinal Job Fair will be Wednesday, March 26 from noon to 4:00 p.m. in Worthen Arena. More than 150 employers will be on campus to discuss full-time, part-time off-campus, and internship opportunities with Ball State students.
