Introducing 2003 Alumni Council Members

Cathey A. Boggs, '71, president, is an executive legal secretary at the Cincinnati, OH office of Squire Sanders and Dempsey, which is one of the Cleveland-based firm's 26 offices worldwide.

Her goals as this year's Alumni Association president are to increase alumni participation in university and alumni activities and encourage greater participation in local alumni clubs.

Since joining the Alumni Council in 1992, Boggs has served as alumni ambassador in Chicago, IL and worked with the following committees: nominating, the Distinguished Alumni Award, Benny Award, alumni scholarship, technology, and services.

In her free time, Boggs works with Tall Stacks, a Cincinnati festival celebrating the steamboating era. She is a member of Summerfair, Inc. and volunteers at community events and fund-raisers, including Oktoberfest, The Epilepsy Council, Flying Pig Marathon, and the Cincinnati Flower Show.

Mark A. Ervin, '81MA85, vice president, is an attorney and partner at Beasley and Gilkison, LLP in Muncie.

He joined the Alumni Council as an at-large representative and currently serves as its representative to the Ball State University Foundation board of directors. Ervin has also been a member of the presidential search committee, John R. Emens Scholars selection committee, and the foundation philanthropy advisory committee.

"I think the strengths that I can bring to the Council includemy long-term knowledge about, and appreciation for, the history of Ball State. I also have a strong desire to see Ball State continue to grow and improve and become the best institution possible to fulfill its unique niche within Indiana," Ervin says.

He says he feels fortunate to have worked in a variety of areas at the Alumni Association. A former Association staff member, Ervin is a recipient of the Benny Award, Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, and the inaugural Executive Director's Award.

Aside from his involvement at Ball State, he participates in the Exchange Club of Muncie. He is on the board of directors for the Mental Health Association of Delaware County, Muncie Jaycees, and the East Central Indiana Estate Planning Council.

Terry R. Coleman, '84, represents the Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM) Alumni Society and is former president of the NREM Constituent Society.

"It's a great way to stay in touch with changes and current thought in my profession and to connect with alumni, faculty, and students," he says of his Council appointment.

Coleman, a north region supervisor with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, works in the Division of State Parks and Reservoirs. One of his goals is for Ball State alumni to continue communicating with each other and students so that new graduates may learn and benefit from past graduates' experiences.

The Cub Scouts, little league baseball, and Kiwanis in Fremont are other organizations to which Coleman has contributed.

Ronald N. Duncan Jr., '88, represents the Cardinal Football Alliance and is a doctor at Family Practice Associates in Elwood.

As a member of the Council, he plans to promote Ball State football and inform members of CFA events. Duncan is a medical director for Community Hospital Visiting Nurses Association and is the secretary of medical staff at St. Vincent's Mercy Hospital. He also holds a position on the leadership council at Community Physicians, Inc.

James E. Grim, Jr., '80, represents the Journalism Alumni Association. The past president of the journalsim group, Grim is a community school coordinator at George Washington Community School in Indianapolis.

He became involved with the Alumni Council because of "a desire to further give back to the university that helped to provide the foundation for everything I have achieved."

Grim's goal is to represent the Journalism Alumni Association to his fullest potential.

Grim is an adjunct faculty member at the Indiana University School of Journalism, a member of the Tarkington Tower Homeowners Association, and board member of Life Transitions, Inc.

Kathy I. Hutson, '80MA82AS92, serves as the representative of the Nursing Alumni Association. She is a consultant/practice facilitator for the emergency department at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Hutson has been an active member of the Nursing Alumni board, having served as secretary, vice president, and president. She says she appreciates the opportunity to become better acquainted with Alumni Council members, and looks forward to playing an active role in alumni activities.

Outside of work and her participation with the Alumni Association, Hutson belongs to the International and Indiana State Chapters of the International Association for Forensic Nurses. She also serves as director of the St. Vincent Center for Hope and is a member of the Delaware County Health Board.

John M Lewis, V, '94, at-large member, is the senior director of operations for the Indy Racing League.

A former participant on the Student Alumni Relations Team (StART), he now is a member of the housing corporation for Ball State's chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He is also a recipient of the GOLD Award.

"Ball State has been very good to me," Lewis says, "and I want to stay involved so I can return the loyalty."

Lewis says he wants students to have the same types of experiences he had at the university, and his position on the Council provides an opportunity to make significant contributions during his term.
