CFA Meeting Minutes, July 18, 2002
Present: Jamie Ashton, Brennen Baker, Tracy Curry, Ron Duncan, Craig Kantner,  Bill Lynch, Brian Outlaw and Ed Shipley.

President Craig Kantner called the meeting to order at 6:50 p.m. and all members present made introductions.

BOARD MEMBER UPDATE

A motion was made by Brennen Baker to make Ed Shipley and Bill Lynch members of the Board of Directors of the Cardinal Football Alliance.  The motion was seconded by Jamie Ashton and carried.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Ed Shipley referred to a handout of 32 lettermen that have made a gift to the CFA and became members.  The total amount in CFA's Foundation account, #412, is $2,019.91.  Craig Kantner gave Ed the enrollment form of a new member and his gift, which brings the membership to 33 and the account total to $2,044.19.

GOLF OUTING REPORT

Craig Kantner deferred to Ed Shipley regarding the Football Lettermen Golf and Dinner Outing that was held on June 13, 2002, at Pebble Brook Golf Club in Noblesville.  Ed referred to a handout of the financial report for the outing.  Eighty-eight people attended the outing and dinner.  Bill Lynch gave a background report on when and why the football lettermen golf outing began.  The consensus was it was a good event and should be continued in a similar format.

WEBSITE REPORT

Jamie Ashton reported that Bill Rinehart will have a final test of the CFA's website available on Monday, July 22 and the site should be live by Wednesday, July 24.  The site's domain is CFALettermen.com.  Jamie explained that they intend to have a 2-tier site where anyone can view the cover page and general news regarding the football team and games.  The second tier will be password protected and only CFA members will have the password to view this tier.  The second tier will contain data from the profile sheets from other CFA members.  CFA members can also sign up for a free e-mail address when using the site.  Ron Duncan will manage the site once it is up and running.

The possibility of Coach Bill Lynch providing CFA members with Monday recaps of the games and Friday updates on games was discussed.  These could be delivered by push e-mail to CFA members and may be done in audio or video form.

CFA CONSTITUTION UPDATE

A draft of the CFA Constitution was handed out and Ed Shipley informed the board that a constitution would need to be adopted in the future.  Ed said that this was just a draft and that the board could change it as needed.  Brennen Baker suggested that the entire board review Articles I-IV of the constitution and bring revisions to the next meeting.  Craig Kantner agreed.

FUTURE BOARD MEMBER ADDITIONS

Craig Kantner brought up the possible addition of board members to bring the total from six to nine.  A discussion took place that the CFA needed more diversity in age and that it would be ideal to get one new board member who graduated in the 1960s, the 1970s, and the 1990s since the 1980s was well represented.  Jamie Ashton agreed to contact lettermen from the 1960s, Craig Kantner will make the contacts for lettermen from the 1970s, and Brian Outlaw will contact graduates from the 1990s to see who might be interested.

CFA FALL ACTIVITY

Dates were discussed for a fall activity in conjunction with a BSU football game.  It was decided that most of the members wanted an activity on Homecoming day, October 19, 2002.  Craig Kantner asked Coach Lynch about the possibility of CFA members obtaining field passes and having access to the training facility on game days.  Coach Lynch said it wouldn't be a problem so long as all rules and regulations were adhered to.  Craig Kantner also inquired about the possibility of getting a block of seats for the CFA at Homecoming and that they would like them to be located on the training facility.  Ed Shipley said he would check into that possibility.  Brennen Baker volunteered to head up a committee and will work with Ed Shipley to make plans for Homecoming day.

2002 FOOTBALL UPDATE

Coach Lynch passed out the new football media guide for 2002 and a draft of the Ball State Football Alumni Newsletter.  The newsletter goes to all CVC members and football lettermen.  The current addition of the newsletter will announce the formation of the CFA.

Coach Lynch also reported that they have had 80-90 players in the weight room for the past couple of weeks which is a high number considering only 20 are in summer school.  He also reported that 10 of BSU's recruits and a couple of walk-ons will be playing in the Indiana High School North/South football game.

OTHER BUSINESS

Jamie Ashton said that all board members needed to make telephone calls to other lettermen following the meeting to encourage new membership in the CFA.

Ed Shipley also informed the group that they would need to stay active throughout the year, not just during the football season, to solidify the group.  There was a discussion about the possibility of having a spring event in conjunction with the spring football game.

It was unanimously reaffirmed that Craig Kantner will be serving as CFA president, Jamie Ashton will be vice president and liaison to the Alumni Association, and Ron Duncan will be the Alumni Council representative.

There being no further business, Craig Kantner made a motion to adjourn, Brian Outlaw seconded the motion, and the meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
