Fehribach replaces Jeff Smulyan, who served two terms and has stepped down because of other commitments. Fehribach's appointment is for four years and begins Jan. 30 at the trustees next meeting.
"I'm honored that the governor would consider me for the appointment," Fehribach said. "Service to my alma mater is very important to me, and I look forward to serving the Ball State community and the people of Indiana."
Fehribach earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1981 and a master's degree in personnel administration in 1983 from Ball State and a law degree from Ohio Northern University in 1985. He was Ball State's student body president in 1979-80 and was named outstanding alumnus in 1988 by the university's disabled student services office.
Besides consulting on accessibility design for Ball State's Emens Auditorium and Music Instruction Building, Fehribach has worked on several high-profile construction and renovation projects across Indiana and the
Board of Trustees President Thomas L. DeWeese welcomed Fehribach's appointment.
"Greg has a deep affection for Ball State," DeWeese said. "He will be a great asset as we work to build on the forward momentum the university is generating."
University Provost Beverley Pitts called Fehribach a great friend to the university.
"Greg has always been a very active and interested alumnus, and we are pleased that he will serve as a trustee," she said. "He has spoken about accessibility issues at UniverCity and to students, and he has been a great ambassador for the university, introducing campus leaders to civic and political leaders in Indianapolis."
Both DeWeese and Pitts thanked Smulyan for his service to Ball State.
Smulyan heads Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications, which owns television, radio and publishing interests across the nation and in
"Jeff's knowledge of the ever-changing nature of the communications industry served Ball State well as we witnessed the growth of the College of Communication, Information, and Media into a state and national leader in communications education," she said. "We will continue to draw upon Jeff's expertise, particularly in the areas of broadband and wireless communication."
