Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients

2007

J. Robert "Bob" Browning, '75 is a shareholder and co-founder of Peters, Browning & Co., P.C.  Peters, Browning & Co. was founded in 1994 and serves as a CPA practice providing business consulting, tax planning and preparation, financial statement audits, reviews and compilations, and various additional business and personal financial planning services. 

Browning has given much of his time and talents to Ball State University by serving on the Wings for the Future National Campaign Committee, the Alumni Center National Steering Committee, the National Development Council, was chairman of the Class of 1975 25-year Gift Committee, and is a member of the Fellows Society.
Browning has also been on the Executive Committee for the BSU Alumni Association from 1991 to 1998 and served as Alumni Council President in 1997 as well as serving on many varied committees for the Alumni Council.  He also is a member of the Board of Directors for the Ball State University Foundation serving on the Audit Committee (Chair 1994-1997), the Operations Committee (Chair 2000-2002), the Investment Committee, the Committee on Directors, and the Planned Giving Committees.

Additional volunteer opportunities that Browning has been a part of include Rotary International where he has served as Secretary of the Greenwood White River Club since its formation in 2003 and will become President-Elect in July 2007.  He has been named Club Secretary of the Year twice by Rotary District 6580 (2003-2004 and 2004-2005).  At the District lever, he is serving his second term as Chair of the District Simplified Grants Committee of the Rotary Foundation and was named Foundation Committee Chair of the Year for 2005-2006.  He has also held positions with the Center Grove High School Choir Parents Organization, United Way of Central Indiana, St. Barnabas Catholic Church, and the Center Grove Lassie League.

Browning has previously been the recipient of the Benny Award given by the Ball State University Alumni Association in 1999 and the Miller College of Business Award of Achievement in 2001.

Matthew J. Momper, '83 is President of Momper Insulation located in Fort Wayne, IN. Momper Insulation, the largest insulation company in Indiana, was founded in 1956 by Matt's father, Charlie, and his uncle, Louie Momper.  In 1990, Matt and his brother, Andy, took over the business. Momper is also a Regional Manager of Installed Building Products (IBP) and President of MK Properties.

At Ball State University, Momper serves on the Board of Directors for the BSU Foundation, the Northeast Indiana Alumni Chapter, and the National Philanthropic Council.  Momper also serves on the Board of Directors for the Fort Wayne Zoo, the Allen County Building Department, the Wyndemere Subdivision, the Athletic Board of Directors for the University of St. Francis and St. June Catholic Church and School, and the State of Indiana IBA Code Committee.

Momper was named the Emens Outstanding Senior at Ball State in 1983, received the Circle Achievement award in 1994, received the Benny Award in 2000 given by the Ball State University Alumni Association, and was awarded the Miller College of Business Award of Achievement in 2002.  He was also named the Home Builders Association Associate of the Year in 1993 and Delta Tau Delta Alumnus of the Year in 1994.

Michael P. Smith, '73 is the Executive Director of the Media Management Center at Northwestern, an executive education and research center affiliated with Kellogg and the Medill School of Journalism.  He is also the chair of the media management department MBA program in the Kellogg School and a fellow in the honors Communications Residential College. Before joining Northwestern, Smith was assigned to the corporate staff of Knight Ridder Inc. In his journalism career, he was deputy director of the Knight-Ridder's 25/43 Project and managing editor of The News in Boca Raton, Florida. He also worked at Knight Ridder's Detroit Free Press as executive news editor, The Way We Live editor and assistant sports editor. In 1982, as assistant managing editor, he was part of the team at the News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that won the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. His professional work includes advisory positions with manor media companies, including Tribune Co., Hearst Inc. and Gannett Corp.; and industry organizations such as the World Association of Newspapers, the Inter-American Press Association and national press associations in Colombia and Chile.  Smith is a trustee of the Newspaper Association of America Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors.  He has chaired the World Editor and Marketeer Congress twice.

At Ball State Smith was editor of the Daily News in 1972.  He remains connected with the university and returns to campus often as a Professional-in-Residence for the journalism department.  He received the Department of Journalism's Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1981 and was inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame in 1996 at Ball State.  Smith has been instrumental in setting up two funds in the Department of Journalism at Ball State: a scholarship for incoming freshmen and a fund for faculty and student development.  In addition, he has been a proponent and supporter of the David Knott Scholarship in the department.  He previously served on the department's Editorial Advisory Board and will serve on the advisory board of the College of Communication, Information, and Media.

His service to the university includes work with various campaigns, including the Drive to Distinction to renovate Scheumann Stadium.  He was a member of the Alumni Council in the 1980s.  He currently serves on the National Philanthropy Council, is a member of the Fellows Society and Cardinal Varsity Club.
