Professional societies plan spring activities
Professional societies have numerous events scheduled for the coming months.

CAP: The College of Architecture and Planning Alumni Society board of directors will meet Thursday, March 9, at the CAP Indianapolis Center. Another meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 20.

FCS: The Family and Consumer Sciences history committee will meet Wednesday, March 22, at the Alumni Center.

The board of directors is accepting nominations for its biennial awards of Distinction and Achievement and Emerging Professional Award of Merit.

Journalism: Three alumni will be among those honored NREM Conducts Internship Day during the annual journalism awards luncheon, Tuesday, April 4, on campus.

Jennifer George-Palilonis, '96MA05, and Steven Patterson, '96, will receive Outstanding Young Alumnus awards and Paul Nussbaum, '74, will be presented the Outstanding Alumnus Award.

George-Palilonis is the journalism graphics sequence coordinator at Ball State. An author and public speaker, she has completed eight newspaper redesigns for news organizations nationwide.

Patterson is the city hall reporter for the Gary Post-Tribune, where he has worked since 1997. He has  garnered numerous honors for his writing and has established a reputation for hard-hitting investigative reporting.

Nussbaum is an awardwinning journalist who has  worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer since 1982 as a national correspondent, health and science editor, foreign editor, and managing editor of the Sunday magazine.

Melvin Sharpe, public relations sequence coordinator in Ball State's Department of Journalism, will be inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame. Sharpe, who will retire at the end of this academic year, has many accolades related to the advancement of the public relations profession.

The Journalism Alumni Society board of directors will meet following the luncheon.

NREM: The Natural Resources and Environmental Management Alumni Society board of directors will host a spring bike ride along the Cardinal Greenway, Saturday, April 8. Family and friends are invited to attend. The bike ride will begin at Wysor Street Depot at 1:00 p.m.

The board will host its annual alumni awards dinner, Friday, April 21, at the Alumni Center.

Charles Mortensen, professor emeritus, will receive the Award of Distinction. The award of Achievement will be presented to Sheryl Myers, '71MA76, and Kyle Johnson, '01, will receive the NREM Award of Merit.

Myers teaches biology, marine ecology, and zoology in Anderson. Johnson is the GIS coordinator for Delaware County's Offi ce of Geographic Information.

The board will host the annual White River Clean-up, Saturday, May 20. The next board meeting is Thursday, August 31.

Nursing: The Nursing Alumni Association will host its annual Nursing Alumni banquet, Saturday, April 29, at the Alumni Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The nursing class of 1956 will celebrate its 50th anniversary reunion in conjunction with the banquet. The reunion will begin at 10:00 a.m. The Nursing Pinning Ceremony will be at Emens Auditorium, Friday, May 5.


Alumni chapters sponsor outings, plan events
Alumni chapters throughout Indiana will conduct events and meetings in the upcoming weeks.

Greater Indianapolis: The Greater Indianapolis Alumni Chapter board of directors will meet Thursday, March 2, in Indianapolis.

The chapter hosted winter events, including the Indianapolis Ice outing, Casino Night at Jillian's, and an outing at the Murat Theatre for the production of STOMP.

Michiana: The Michiana Alumni Chapter will host its Casino Night at the Elks Club in Elkhart, Saturday, April 22. Stephanie Markley, '90, and Amy Richardson, '96, will coordinate the event.

An admissions reception for area high school students was hosted in South Bend, February 15.

Northeastern Indiana: The Northeastern Indiana Area Alumni Chapter has appointed Maureen Hire, '92, to the board of directors.

An admissions reception for area juniors and seniors was conducted in Fort Wayne, February 23. The chapter hosted its annual TGIF outing, Friday, February 17, and its Science Central family outing, Sunday, February 26, in Fort Wayne.

The next chapter meeting will be Thursday, April 20 at 6:00 p.m., in Fort Wayne.
