Nursing Meeting Minutes, February 16, 2006
Board Members Present: Diane Blankenship, Mary Buckley, Phyllis Chapin, Pam Cole, Mario Contreraz, Kathy Hutson, Doreen Johnson, Jo Ann Johnston, Ernie Krug, Connie McIntosh, Jan Noel, Nadia Paul, Ruth Ann Tolle.

President Connie McIntosh called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. and asked for any corrections or additions to the minutes of the December 8, 2005 Nursing Alumni board of directors meeting.  Kathy Hutson made a motion to approve the minutes as corrected.  Jan Noel seconded the motion and the minutes were approved by voice vote.

Old Business
December 17, 2005 Nursing Pinning Ceremony Review—It was reported that everything went well.

Committee Reports:

2006 Nursing Alumni Scholarship Committee—Ruth Ann Tolle reported on behalf of the committee that there were 17 scholarship applicants and that all 17 were selected to receive an award ranging from $250-$2,000, for a total of $16,750.  The stipends will be applied to the recipients Fall 2006 tuition.

2006 Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award Committee—Kathy Hutson reported on behalf of the committee that there were nine nominees and she reviewed them for the board.  The committee recommended Helen M. (Scott) Borman, Class of 1934 and Jay K. Ober, Class of 2003 as recipients for the 2006 award.  Following discussion, Jo Ann Johnston made a motion to select Helen Borman as a recipient of the 2006 award, Hutson seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.  Hutson made a motion to select Jay Ober as a recipient of the 2006 award, Pam Cole seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.  McIntosh will contact the recipients and formal letters with Banquet information will be sent to them by Ernie Krug.  Borman, who resides in Venice, FL is not able to travel, due to health and age factors.  After discussion, Jo Ann Johnston stated that she will be traveling to Florida in the near future and volunteered to contact Borman to present the award to her then.

2006 Nursing Alumni Banquet Review Committee—McIntosh reported that she had a virtual meeting with Mary Buckley and Linda Siktberg and it is recommended to have a moment of silence before the meal and for the Roll Call of Classes segment, to announce them by decades.  There was board discussion and the following decisions were made:

Roll Call of Classes will start with the most senior class, and each individual class year will be called through the year previous to the 50-Year class.  The 25- and 50-Year classes will be recognized and from that point classes will be called by decade.                        

Charms for the 25- and 50-Year classes will be placed with each member's name tag at the Registration Table.  Corsages for the most senior nurses and furthest traveled will also be placed with their name tag, respectively.

The Banquet will be at the Alumni Center on Saturday, April 29, 5:30 p.m., Social Hour, 6:30 p.m., Dinner/Program.  There will be a reunion of the 50-Year Class of 1956.  Hutson will order 25 additional charms for the class and request no gift wrapping from the jeweler.  Phyllis Chapin, Jo Ann Johnston, and Janet Noel volunteered to assist at the Registration Table.  McIntosh will greet the Award recipient attending.   

New Business
Nursing Alumni Association title change—Tabled until the next board meeting.

Nursing Pinning Ceremony, May 5, 2006, Emens Auditorium—Hutson and McIntosh volunteered to represent the board at a class meeting.  Chapin will check with the class sponsor regarding a meeting date with the students.  There is an ample supply of scissors to be given to the graduates.  The following information is needed from the School of Nursing:

  • Rehearsal date and time
  • Confirmation of the time for the Ceremony
  • Confirmation of the number of graduates
  • Assignment of distribution of Pinning programs

Complete, final data for the program must be submitted by Monday, April 3 to Diane Blankenship, Alumni Association.

The Link Nursing Alumni Newsletter—The School of Nursing will be responsible for the printing and mailing process of the newsletter.  McIntosh will coordinate the production of the newsletter.  It is scheduled to be mailed by March 3.

Department Update
Phyllis Chapin reported the following, on behalf of the School of Nursing:  Fall 2005 enrollment had 78 students admitted, and 90 percent of those had a 3.0 or high GPA.  Spring 2006 enrollment is between 80-90.  Tentatively, 71 will graduate in May 2006.

The department has been featured in numerous publications and television (Channels 8 and 13).

High-fidelity equipment has been added to the department—SimMan, SimBaby, and SimNoel (a laboring and delivering mother).

Alumni Association/Alumni Council Update
Kathy Hutson reported on the Alumni Council meeting of January 21, 2006.  The 2006 budget was approved.  At the time of the meeting there were three Board of Trustees members who had completed their terms.  The governor has since made three appointments to replace them:  Marianne Glick, Frank Hancock, '70; and Barbara Phillips, '52MA63.

Hutson encouraged the board to visit the Alumni Association web site at www.bsu.edu/alumni in order to gain information about the services and programs available to alumni and also to become more involved.

Other Business
Community Project—Muncie Children's Museum—McIntosh gave a brief overview of the endeavor.  The museum would like to have volunteers from the board and nursing students on Friday, April 7, 2006, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., for their "Friends and Family Fun Night," which is a focus on literacy.  Board volunteers are needed to assist with revamping the Nursing Alumni display area at the museum prior to the April 7 event.  The museum has presented the opportunity for our participation at their Health Fair on   Saturday, April 22, 2006.  Volunteers would be needed 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Last year approximately 1,300 children attended.  Also, the museum has requested that we consider presenting a focus on nursing in October 2006.  The board will have further discussion and make a decision at a future meeting.

The next Nursing Alumni board of directors meeting will be Tuesday, April 11, 2006, 5:30 p.m., Alumni Center, Board Room.  Agenda items will include the following:

  • Nursing Alumni Banquet Details
  • May 2006 Pinning Details
    • Flowers Order; Scissors/Flowers Distribution; Emens set-up; program distribution)
  • 2006-2007 Nursing Alumni Board of Directors Slate (Vice President, Secretary)
  • Fall 2006 Board of Directors Meeting Date

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
