BSUAA announces Coach of Year awards

The Ball State Alumni Association has awarded five high school Coach of the Year honors. Recipients include: J. Agnew, '96; Joe Keller, '91; Todd Salkoski, '80MA88; Rex Leavitt, '71MPA74; and Matt Fine, '98.

The award is presented to Indiana high school head coaches in all Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA)-recognized sports.

Agnew, the girl's swimming coach at Yorktown High School, received the honor for the third consecutive year. He led the Tigers to a 10-0 dual record. The team finished the season as conference champions and placed seventh in the state.

Boy's swimming coach Keller led the Northridge High School Raiders to a 10-1 dual meet record. This season marked the seventh consecutive Northern Lakes Conference and the third consecutive Concord sectional championship for the team.

The Raiders finished the season placing third as a team at the state, while winning individual state titles in the 200 medley relay, 200 IM, and 100 backstroke. Salkoski led his Shenandoah High School girl's basketball team to a 22-5 win-loss record during the 2004-05 season. The Raiders won the White River Athletic Conference, Henry County, and sectional championships for the sixth straight time, and were the class 2-A state champions for the second time in three years. Salkoski has led the team with an overall career win-loss record of 169-51.

Elwood Community High School's wrestling coach, Leavitt led his team to a win loss record of 19-3 during the 2004-05 season.

The Panthers were Hamilton Heights sectional champions and won the Central Indiana Conference for the 17th straight year. Leavitt has a career win-loss record of 277-100.

Fine, head coach of the Muncie Central boy's basketball team, directed the Bearcats to a 27-2 win-loss record for the 2004-05 season. The team had wins at the Hall of Fame Classic, the North Central Conference, and finished as the sectional, regional, and semi-state champions. They were runners-up in the Class 4-A state championship.

Two softball players chosen for All-MAC

Senior softball players Amy Brownfield, '05, (Pueblo, CO/Centennial H.S.) and Alyssa Huffman (Brownsburg/Brownsburg H.S.) have been selected to the 2005 Academic All-Mid-American Conference softball team.

A four-year letterwinner, Brownfi eld made a teamleading 36 appearances as pitcher this spring. She concluded her career with 13 victories, 168 strikeouts, 37 games started, 21 completed games, and 79 appearances over 319.2 innings of work. She registered a .979 fi elding percentage with ten putouts and 128 assists.

A starter in 54 of 56 games this season, shortstop Huffman compiled a .222 batting average. Her 16 runs scored tied for fourth, while her five stolen bases were second on the team.

Huffman, who was selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Softball Second Team, is a threetime National Fast-pitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete and a 2005 recipient of the MAC Presidential Award for Academic Excellence.

Thompson named to academic team

Ball State women's tennis player Jessica Thompson (Carmel/Carmel H.S.) has been named to the 2005 All-MAC Team.

The sophomore psychology major owns the team's third-highest GPA at 3.75.

Thompson tallied a 12-6 singles record and a 13-3 doubles record. She managed a perfect 5-0 MAC doubles record and posted an eightmatch winning streak at the number-two doubles position.

Track places two on academic squad

Junior Jill Scully (Valparaiso/Valparaiso H.S.) and sophomore Rose Lehe (Wolcott/Tri-County H.S.) have been named to the Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team.

Scully earned All-MAC First Team accolades and compiled a 3.51 GPA in mathematics. She was named to the Academic All-MAC Cross Country Team last fall.

Lehe, a sophomore dietetics major, has managed a team-high 3.90 GPA. She added personal bests in three events throughout last season.

Men's Volleycards earn MIVA honors

Junior Evan Berg (Bristol, WI/Central H.S.) has been named to the 2005 All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) First Team and sophomore Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller H.S.) to the All-MIVA Second Team.

Eight others have earned 2005 Academic All-MIVA honors. They include: Andrew Braley, '05 (Kailua, HI/Kalahoe H. S.); Scott Bushong (Churubusco/Carroll H.S.); Dave Carlson (Coon Rapids. MI/Coon Rapids H.S.); and Zoran Grabovac (Des Moines IA/Hoover H.S.). Also, Ken Haney (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville H.S.); Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller H.S.); Arturo Rivera (Orlando, FL/Timer Creek H.S.); and Mark Rumschik (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park H.S.).

Berg, an outside attacker, ended the season with 265 kills. His 261 digs were the second-highest total in the country and his 2.46 digs per game ranked eighth in the nation and second in the MIVA. Berg was the only Cardinal to play in all 106 games.

Meyer, outside attacker, paced the Cardinals, ranking 14th with a 4.83 points-pergame average and 15th, fifth in the MIVA, with 4.09 killsper-game. He led the team with 377 points and 28 aces.

Braley compiled a 3.34 GPA during his academic career at BSU. As a senior  middle attacker, he played in 83 games, ranking ninth all time in Ball State history.

A middle attacker, Bushong finished with a 3.56 GPA, majoring in elementary education. The junior played in 67 games and had 49 block assists and four solo blocks.

Carlson owns a 3.38 GPA as a business major. A junior, the starting setter notched 1,141 assists in his first year of competition.

An international business major, Grabovac has accumulated a 3.33 GPA. During his junior season, the middle attacker managed 334.5 points and 256 kills with a .355 hitting percentage while playing in 104 games.

Haney, a junior graphic arts management major, compiled a 3.63 GPA. The outside attacker played in six games during the 2005 season.

A 2005 All-MIVA Second Team selection, Meyer has a 3.77 GPA as a computer science major. The sophomore outside attacker led the squad with 427.5 points, 364 kills, and 29 aces in 87 games.

Rivera, a freshman outside attacker/libero, compiled a 3.35 GPA. During his first 79 games, he tallied 39 digs, seven points, four block assists, four aces, three assists, and one kill.

A consumer science major, Rumschik has a 3.74 GPA. In 96 games during the 2005 season, he managed 106 points, 86 kills, 69 digs, 21 blocks, and nine aces.
