Professional groups plan activities

Professional societies have numerous events scheduled for the coming months.

FCS: The Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Society will host its eighth annual Career Mentoring Day, Friday, October 28, at the Alumni Center. A board of directors meeting will follow.

Journalism: The Journalism Alumni Society board of directors met June 11 on campus.

The board discussed long-range initiatives. The group plans to conduct journalism alumni reunions in five-year intervals. The next reunion is scheduled for 2008.

The board also will work to raise awareness of the society among new journalism graduates, and will actively assist the Department of Journalism as requested.

A Professional-in-Residence program will continue to be sponsored by the Journalism Alumni Society annually. The most recent was in April. It included sports media professionals of national prominence. Bob Kravitz, Indianapolis Star; Don Yaeger, '84, Sports Illustrated; and ESPN's Vince Doria were among those involved in the day's events.

The board will participate in department activities during Homecoming Weekend, Friday and Saturday, October 14-15. In planning stages are activities that will place alumni professionals in classrooms and in contact with students for interaction and networking. Saturday events will coincide with official Homecoming Day festivities.

Another agenda item was the official adoption of the group's name as the Ball State Journalism Alumni Society. The title change, from Journalism Alumni Association makes the name consistent with the Ball State University Alumni Association constitutional structure for constituent groups.

The next board meeting is set for Friday, October 14.
