Milestones and memories are part of the fabric and environment of a university. Milestones are those points of time in the history of a university that provide major impetus for changes, growth, and improvement. They are marked by innovations, new leadership, new facilities, and new academic programs.

Clearly the first milestone for Ball State was in 1918 when members of the Ball Family made possible the establishment of a state institution of higher learning in Muncie. Another significant milestone was in 1965 when the General Assembly changed the name to Ball State University and the College of Architecture and Planning was established. It altered the academic structure of the university for all time.

Of course memories are unique to each person. But, they collectively establish the traditions that bind together the university with its graduates.

Though memories may fade with time, they are rekindled through all-campus events such as May Commencement on the Arts Terrace and the annual Homecoming celebration. They are kept alive through conversation with others who participated in the Fall Leaf Rake, Watermelon Bust, Bike-A-Thon, or activities through involvement in a campus organization. And they are made legendary through passage from generation to generation, just as stories about Beneficence, Frog Baby, the ghosts of Elliott Hall, and now Shafer Tower create the lore and myth that make Ball State unique.

There are many events and activities in the university community upon which we build our unique foundation. The four main features in this issue of the Alumnus magazine reflect a few recent ones. Chasing tornadoes across the plains and creating a symphony using DNA mapping are experiences that are innovative and stretch the imagination and abilities of students, faculty, and alumni. Meanwhile, this year's commencement and upbeat messages from one new graduate and parents of another, along with a story detailing 100 years of a campus landmark, bring together the past and the future. Collectively the features tie together tradition, imagination, and innovation to signify a forward-thinking university.

In addition, there are many events and changes currently taking place on the campus that will provide the milestones and the memories of the future. A new president is nearing completion of her first year; the College of Architecture and Planning is celebrating its 40th anniversary; a new Communications Studies Building is under construction; McKinley Avenue between Riverside and Neely is being completely renovated and landscaped; construction on a new residence hall will begin shortly; and the Drive to Distinction: The Ball State Stadium Campaign is moving toward its goal of $12 million.

Ball State continues to be a dynamic nationally recognized university that is providing quality graduates for Indiana and the nation, thanks to the continual evolution of milestones and memories.

They are components that hold together the many generations of alumni, faculty, staff, and friends that comprise the university family and community.
