
Indy Art Walk entertains alumni

Alumni and friends gathered September 16 in the Indianapolis Arts District for the fourth annual Indy Art Walk. Participants visited local food establishments and merchants along Massachusetts Avenue and enjoyed performances by Ball State Fine Arts students along the way. The evening concluded at the Rathskeller with entertainment by the Ball State Jazz Ensemble.
CAP: The College of Architecture and Planning Alumni Society celebrated Alumni Day Saturday, September 18. During a dinner program, Greg Jacoby, '82, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Mark Fishero, '83; Allan McGuire, '83; and Todd W. Rottman, '92, received the Award of Outstanding Achievement. Robert A. Fisher was honored with the Charles M. Sappenfield Award of Excellence.
The CAP Alumni board continues working on the college's 40th anniversary celebration for 2005.
FCS: The Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Society will host its seventh annual Career Mentoring Day Thursday, November 18, at the Alumni Center. Alumni will make brief presentations to FCS students and visit with them during a networking reception. An appreciation luncheon will conclude the event.
Journalism: The Journalism Alumni board will participate with Chicago-area journalism alumni in the annual all alumni outing at the Rock Bottom Brewery Monday, December 13, in Chicago, IL. The group took part in the Indy Art Walk in September.
New officers have been selected for the coming biennium. They are: Brian Hayes, '96, president; Layne Cameron, '89, vice president; and Sarah Maisto, '96, Alumni Council representative.
The next board meeting will be in January, during which the group will approve 2005 alumni award recipients.
MCOB: The Miller College of Business Alumni board will meet Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Forum Credit Union, Indianapolis. The board co-hosted its inaugural alumni awards dinner at the Alumni Center, October 1.
John Schnatter, '84, founder, chairman, and CEO of Papa John's Pizza, received the MCOB Hall of Fame Award. Awards of Distinction were presented to Wil Davis, '75, chairman, president, and co-founder of Ontario Systems; Ron Fauquher, '78, senior vice president and co-founder of Ontario Systems; and Carl George, '70MA71, chief CEO of Clifton Gunderson LLP.
Awards of Achievement were presented to Nora Bammann, '84, senior vice president and director of human resources at Conseco; Scott Cotherman, '80, CEO of Corbett Accel Healthcare Group, Inc.; Craig Dunn, '75, president of Liberty Financial Group; and Daniel Prickel, '76MBA80, president of Process Plus.
NREM: The Natural Resources and Environmental Management Alumni Society and NREM department will co-host their annual Career Day Wednesday, November 10, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
A panel of NREM alumni will address students and answer questions about careers. The NREM Alumni board will meet at West Quad following the event.
Nursing: The Nursing Alumni board has elected new offi cers. They are: Connie McIntosh, '89; president; and Mary Buckley, '94, vice president. The fall pinning ceremony will take place Saturday, December 18, in Emens Auditorium. The alumni banquet will be Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Alumni Center.
Teachers College: The Teachers College Alumni board has recognized William Hatcher, '64MA67, as the 2004 Outstanding Alumnus. Hatcher retired in June after a 40-year career in education. Most recently, he was superintendent of the Kern High School District in California.
Alumni clubs host events, elections
Activities and officer elections have been conducted by alumni clubs throughout the region.
Adams-Wells Alumni Club:
The Adams-Wells Alumni Club sponsored an entry in the Bluffton Street Fair Parade in September. The entry included special guest Charlie Cardinal.
The board conducted its fall Adopt-A-Highway cleanup Saturday, October 2. Holly Mahnensmith, '92MA96, was in charge of the activity.
The next club meeting will be Wednesday, February 23, 2005.
Indianapolis Alumni Club:
Tom Andrews, '77, will serve as host for the Indianapolis Ice outing January 15, 2005. Casino Night at Jillian's is set for Saturday, February 5, 2005. Steph Meyers, '91MA92, is chairman of the event.
Michiana Alumni Club:
The Michiana Alumni Club will host a wine tasting outing Saturday, December 4, at the Elco Theatre in Elkhart. Vince Von Der Vellen, '87, will host the event.
The club will sponsor a bus trip to Kalamazoo, MI, for the Saturday, January 22, 2005 men's basketball game against Western Michigan. Bob Woods, '65EdD90, is chairman of a golf and dinner outing scheduled for Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Bent Oak Golf Club in Elkhart.
Officers have been selected for next year. They are Wes Steffen, '00, president; and Gail Jaskowiak, '77, vice president.
Northeastern Indiana Alumni Club:
The Northeastern Indiana Alumni Club will sponsor a reception for Ball State President Jo Ann Gora, Thursday, October 28, at the Fort Wayne Country Club. Jo Ann Johnston, '85MA88, is in charge of the event.
Charles Green, '72MA75EdD82; Johnston; Barb Minger, '92MA95; Mike McMillen, '67; and Brenda West, '87, have agreed to new three-year board commitments.
Homecoming week sparks spirit
With the theme "Spark the Spirit," students, faculty and staff, and alumni turned out to show their Ball State pride during the many Homecoming festivities taking place October 4-9. Throughout the week, events included a residence hall dinner, Air Jam lip sync competition, talent search, royalty coronation, bed race, and the Alumni Awards Dinner.
The week culminated Saturday, October 9, with the Homecoming parade, pre-game alumni reunions, and the Cardinal football match against Eastern Michigan University, which ended in a 31-24 loss to EMU after an effort that saw Ball State leading throughout much of the fourth quarter. Attendance at the game topped 14,600.
