Presentation by the Ball State Office of Admissions
Larry Waters began the presentation with a brief overview of some of the past and present figures of Admissions at Ball State. The impact of Ball State’s marketing campaign has been very positive. Since the fall of 1998, admissions standards have been raised and there have been smaller freshman classes by design, but much higher quality. Currently, there are more students than we have room for. The higher quality students include National Merit Scholars, National Achievement Scholars, National Hispanic Scholars, Project Excellence Scholars, and Whitinger Scholars.
Some of the challenges he expressed include how to communicate with the “MTV” generation, expanding recruitment versus budget restraints, getting into high schools to recruit students, lack of institutional funding for need-based aid, and the need to increase students of color.
Elaine Cotner continued the presentation by evaluating the admissions criteria and standards. She reviewed the factors used in admissions, including the Core 40 curriculum and the academic index used for admitting and denying students.
Penny Bundy offered an explanation of the Connect Program, and David Davis concluded the presentation by covering areas including early outreach programs and recruiting for diversity.
