Eugene White called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m. After review of the June 7, 2005 minutes, White made a motion to accept the minutes, seconded by Phil Metcalf. The minutes were approved by voice vote.
Symphony on the Prairie Outing Update
Ernie Krug gave a brief report on the Symphony on the Prairie Outing. The overall attendance was up from the previous year. Approximately 15 of the alumni attending the event were from the Teachers College. Julie Bradshaw with the Indianapolis Area Alumni Chapter said that they would like to invite the Teachers College Alumni to participate in the event again in 2006.
Children's Museum of Indianapolis Outing
Krug reported that reservations will be taken until 5:00 p.m. on September 30. At the time of the meeting, there were 669 reservations.
Roy Weaver, Phil Metcalf, Mike Garringer, Laura Waldron, Ernie Krug, and Jeannine Browning volunteered to staff the registration table. Volunteers were to arrive at the museum at 5:30 p.m.
Maps and coat checks were to be available the evening of the outing. The food court was scheduled to be open until 8:00 p.m. and the gift store was to remain open until 9:00 p.m. Tables and chairs were organized to be located in the lobby area.
Teachers College Presentation
Matt Stuve, Assistant Professor of Educational Studies gave a presentation on the rGrade program. The program is an electronic assessment tool that has led to the creation of Educational Infomatics, the first spin-off business in Ball State University history.
Stuve demonstrated how the rubrick program worked. Students can use this program to help them demonstrate their performance and can also use the program to "showcase" their work to future employers.
Review of Forms
Changes to the Innovative Education Grant Form
- Terry Austin will update the proposal guidelines section with the addition of the request for a budget from the applicants.
- Date of the memo changed to September 24, 2005.
- Deadline date of the application changed to June 2, 2006.
- Notification date for grant applicants changed to July 31, 2006.
Innovative Education Grant recipient is Timothy A. Peters. Peters teaches at Indianapolis Public School Number 559. He will receive his grant second semester. Ivy Disher was not awarded a grant due to her departure from Minnetrista Cultural Center.
Outstanding Alumni Award Nomination Form
- Deadline date of the nomination form changed to June 2, 2006.
Teachers College Alumni Scholarship Form
- Newly created Kenneth and Mildred Collier Scholarship will be added to the Specific Scholarships section of the application. Two students will receive this scholarship spring semester.
- The second criteria in the General Scholarships section will be replaced with "Admitted to the teaching curriculum."
- Deadline date on the application will be changed to April 3, 2006.
- Notification date changed to August 1, 2006.
Discussion followed on types of scholarship available for students ranging from non-traditional to freshman students. Dean Weaver will see what Teachers College departmental scholarships are available. Krug suggested having a staff member of Scholarships and Financial Aid give a presentation at the June 2006 meeting. He will have the balances for the Teachers College alumni scholarships for the June meeting.
Committee Assignments for 2005-06
Mary Link made a motion to keep committee assignments the same for academic year 2005-2006, seconded by Phil Metcalf. The motion was approved by voice vote. The committee assignments are as follow:
- Budget: Dean Weaver, Eugene White, Mike Garringer
- Innovative Education Grant: Committee chair, Sharon Gunyon, Ernie Krug, Doug Siebert, Steve Brace, and Steve Yeager
- Outstanding Alumni: Committee chair, Judy Briganti, Chris Carr and David McIntosh.
- Teachers College Scholarship: Committee chair, Jeannine Browning, Phil Metcalf, Mary Link, Maria Truong, Terri Austin, Kate Webber, and Michelle Harrell
Election of 2006 Officers
Mary Link made a motion for officers to remain the same for the academic year 2005-2006, seconded by Phil Metcalf. The motion was approved by voice vote. The officers for 2006 are as follow:
President: Eugene White
Vice President: Mike Garringer
Secretary: Jeannine Browning
Alumni Council Representative: Phil Metcalf
Doug Siebert's term is up for renewal. Link will contact Siebert to see if he would like to renew his term.
Jeanie Griggs has married and moved to South Carolina. Weaver will check for a new board member.
Dean's Report
Weaver gave a brief update on the Teachers College. He expressed appreciation for President Jo Ann M. Gora's strong support for and public appreciation of Teachers College initiatives and accomplishments.
The Philanthropic Council meets at the Alumni Center on September 23.
