Dean’s Report

Dean Weaver distributed copies of the Board of Examiners Report and Teachers College Department Chair minutes for the board to review. He noted that two faculty members and several students will be involved in student teaching this coming year in Germany. He also reported that enrollments continue to increase, largely as a result of graduate courses off-site and via distance learning.

Presentation “The Laptop Initiative and Digital Portfolios”

Dean Weaver gave a brief overview on the laptop initiative and digital portfolios.  In February of 2003, surveys were sent to incoming freshmen who indicated they would be teaching majors.  The surveys were used to evaluate the level of students’ technology literacy.  As of June 9, 290 completed surveys had been returned to the department.  In May another survey was sent to see if the incoming freshmen were really interested in teacher education and if they had a computer.  All freshmen who plan to major in teacher education take a required introductory course. In this course, they begin to develop a digital portfolio which includes reflections on the 10 INTASC principles, a rationale, and performance-based artifacts. This work is the foundation for ongoing digital portfolio development throughout their college career.
