Muncie, IN – The Ball State University Alumni Association will reach out beyond the limits of Indiana and the United States as they host their next event in SecondLife for alumni and friends. Having had a good turnout and positive experience from the previous event, they are expecting to double the number of attendees with the launch of their second event.
On July 15, 2008 at 7:00 pm the Alumni Association will present the Academy Award winning HBO documentary Baghdad Hospital: Inside the Red Zone. The film was directed by current graduate student and Fulbright Scholarship recipient Dr. Omer Salih Mahid. Born and raised in Baghdad, Dr. Salih Mahid practiced medicine in Baghdad before coming to Ball State to study journalism. Working for only $3 a month under the control of Saddam Hussein, Dr. Salih Mahid was asked to help interpret for English speaking journalists who were covering the war inIraq which led Dr. Sahil Mahid to discover a passion for journalism. This groundbreaking documentary will give viewers a first hand experience on what is happening to Iraqis civilians who are caught in the middle of war. A question and answer session with Dr. Salih Mahid will follow the end of the documentary.
Ball State University's presence in Second Life has been designed and produced by faculty, students and staff from the Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts and Animation with support from the Office of the Provost, College of Fine Arts, Center for Media Design and Information Technology. Their work has won several grants and awards including the Blackboard Greenhouse Grant for Virtual Worlds. The director of IDIAA, John Fillwalk and the associate director of the Teleplex, Dan Lutz are facilitating this event and will be live in Second Life providing introductory remarks.
