Counseling Center efforts:
- Life Skills Classes – Funded through the Lilly II Grant, Counseling Center staff present six to eight life skills classes per semester, reaching 125 students per class. The grant also provides resources for data collection on socially acceptable levels of alcohol consumption and pays for posters and ads.
- National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (October) – Used as an opportunity to distribute information on alcohol use/abuse and conduct screenings and referrals.
- National Alcohol Screening Day (spring) – Provides an opportunity to distribute alcohol awareness materials, conduct screenings and make referrals.
- Substance Abuse Prevention Outreach Team – Conducts classroom presentations, screenings and hosts informational stations about 20 times each year.
- Online Services – Through the center's Web site, students can participate in online screening for alcohol and drug abuse problems and obtain information on referrals.
- Harm Reduction Therapy – The staff counsels more than 80 students annually who have problems with drug and alcohol abuse. Harm reduction involves working with students to help them look at how this abuse affects them.
- Social norming – Information obtained from surveys of Ball State students regarding attitudes, perceptions and use of alcohol is publicized through ads in the student newspaper, posters, and other media to dispel myths many students hold regarding typical alcohol use and abuse.
Health Education Efforts (programs required for students who have violated the university's alcohol policy or state law):
- AlcoholEDU – A self-paced, computer-based alcohol education tool for students who violate university alcohol policies. Students pay $20 to go through the program.
- BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screenings and Intervention for College Students) – Students work one-on-one with health educators to discuss the responsible use of alcohol.
- Court Offenders – A court-ordered program requiring students to meet with a health educator and attend six weekly group sessions.
Housing and Residence Life Efforts:
- AlcoholEDU – Housing and Residence Life mandates participation in this Web-based program for students who violate alcohol policies within housing facilities.
- Training – Along with having the ability to sponsor alcohol awareness programs or alcohol-free events, hall staff members receive training that focuses on individual intervention strategies.
- Students violating the university's alcohol policy within housing facilities are given a warning, face disciplinary probation and risk having their housing contract cancelled. Staff members work in conjunction with the Dean of Students for students who commit serious violations or are repeat offenders.
Office of the Dean of Students Efforts:
- Parental Notification Program - Made possible by the Higher Education Act of 1999, colleges and universities may inform parents regarding students' drug and alcohol violations. Ball State sends a letter to parents when a student has committed a second alcohol violation or first drug violation.
- Disciplinary Sanctions – For an initial offense, students violating the university alcohol policy typically receive 16 weeks of disciplinary probation and are required to participate in an alcohol education program. For more serious first offenses or repeat or multiple offenses students face longer disciplinary probation, suspension or expulsion from the university. Examples of disciplinary conditions that may be applied to a disciplinary sanction include:
- Writing a reflection paper addressing the violation and how it has affected the student and others.
- Referrals to participate in AlcoholEDU, BASICS or to the Counseling Center for an alcohol assessment (when drinking problems appear persistent and serious).
- Disciplinary probation lasting a year or for a student's entire college career.
- Students who have further student code violations while on probation may face suspension or expulsion from the university.
Student Organizations and Activities Efforts (SOA)
- Late Night – Monthly weekend night events providing a variety of alcohol-free activities, such as recreational events, professional entertainment and dances. Sponsored by the University Program Board.
- GSIC (Greek Social Issues Committee) and SET (Social Evaluation Team) – Establish guidelines for the Greek community to reduce or eliminate alcohol-related dangers and liabilities.
- GAMMA (Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol) - Fraternity and sorority members host alcohol-free events and promote alcohol awareness.
- Libraries: Greek Resource Library and the SOA Resource Library provide information covering alcohol awareness, date rape, hazing and risk management.
- President's Manual and Roundtable – Resource manual and meeting to orient fraternity and sorority presidents to resources available through SOA and the university.
