Choosing a Major or MinorIf you are undecided about an academic major, you are not alone! Many students are undecided about a choice of major or are uncertain of the choice they have made.
There are many resources at Ball State University designed to help you make an informed decision about your academic major. The list below will help you get started:

- Individual assessment and feedback is available for students who prefer a more structured approach to exploring majors. See your advisor for more information or contact University College Advising at 285-1161 to schedule an appointment to get started.
- Exploration software programs (e.g., FOCUS, SIGI Plus, Career Finder) are available in the Learning Center (NQ 323) and Career Center (LU 220). These programs ask you questions and analyze your responses in printouts of related academic majors and careers. FOCUS is a self-paced, online career and education planning tool for use by college students. It will enable you to self-assess your career relevant personal qualities and explore career fields and major areas of study that are most compatible with your assessment results. Students who use FOCUS make better decisions about their goals and plans and learn how to self-manage their careers. - Senior VIP Connection offers you a chance to discuss a particular major with an upperclass student in that department. For more information, stop by the Learning Center (NQ 323) or see your advisor.
- Handouts on Ball State majors provide information on requirements and career opportunities and are available in the Learning Center (NQ 323).
- The Career Center (LU 220) provides extensive, up-to-date information and resources, including books, periodicals, computer software, web applications, and other information related to majors and careers.
- Quest can help you identify majors and careers that relate to your interests.
- Vocational evaluation, including individual counseling and interest testing, is available in the Counseling Center (LU 320).
- Each academic department offers career-related information and resources. Ask your instructors for information, visit the departmental office, and check departmental bulletin boards for relevant news.
- ID 101. This one-credit seminar course is designed for undecided first-term freshmen who want a more focused exploration experience. For more information, contact the Freshman Advising Center at 285-1161.
