Muncie's Martin Luther King Jr. activities to be held on campus
Two sisters
who were key figures in an historic U.S. Supreme Court decision will
speak at Ball State to keynote Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities.
Linda Brown Thompson and Cheryl Brown Henderson are daughters of the
late Oliver Brown, one of more than 100 plaintiffs in the 1954 Brown vs.
Board of Education case.

Students create digital campus tour, help develop new software
Campus visitors have a high-tech digital map and a company has
fine-tuned its fledgling software thanks to an innovative group of Ball
State students. “Everything You Need on a CD” allows prospective
students to take a self-guided campus tour. During the yearlong project,
the students helped programmers clean up the software’s glitches and
write the software’s user manual.

Study finds more anti-gay hate crimes
reported by the media
Bryan Byers, a
Ball State criminal justice professor, examined police reports and media
accounts of hate crimes against gays and African-Americans in the weeks
following the 1998 murders of Matthew Shephard and James Byrd.

for students schooled at home
A study of 74
educators who instruct K-12 students at home found that 87 percent teach
health education. About 88 percent felt it was “very important” to do

Estate gift provides funds for student research, publishing
A $309,000 gift from the estate of a former professor will fund
psychology-related research and publishing efforts by graduate students
at Ball State. The Joseph W. Hollis and Marcella Hollis Endowment Fund
was established in early 2002. Mr. Hollis was professor emeritus and
former chair of Ball State’s Department of Counseling Psychology and
Guidance Services.

Counseling Center using Lilly funding for class presentations
Ball State’s Counseling Center is offering educational presentations on
stress, anxiety and depression to classes as part of the university’s
Lilly II student retention grant. Jay Zimmerman, the center’s associate
director, said the presentations help students identify mental health
issues in themselves and others.

Jazz
musician and film composer Terence Blanchard will perform at Emens
Auditorium Monday, Jan. 19 at
7:30 p.m. Blanchard is a multi-Grammy Award nominee, most
recently in 2002 for “Lost in a Fog,” from his Sony Classical release,
“Let’s Get Lost."

art critic coming to campus
Lilly Endowment Inc. and Ball State’s Center for
Media Design (CMD) are bringing intermedia artist Hans Breder and art
critic and poet Donald Kuspit to campus. During their visit, a series of
exhibitions, receptions and a lecture will take place at the Museum of
Art and the Art and Journalism Building’s Atrium Gallery.
