Take this quiz to see how well you understand Air Pressure.

Here are some questions for you to research on your own:

  1. What effects does nature have on air pressure? Look at such things as the jet stream, changes in humidity, changes in weather like rain and snow, etc.
  2. Look at some planes designed to fly at very high altitudes, like the U-2 and the SR-71. How do their shapes and speeds reflect the air pressure in which they fly?
  3. What happens when air pressure changes during flight?
  4. Why does a commercial airplane taking off from Denver have to weigh less than the same commercial airplane taking off from Chicago? (You may wish to visit your local airport and ask whether any weight changes are neccessary for takeoff) What is the maximum takeoff weight for Denver? Los Angeles? Chicago?
