Adventures in Biomedicine

July 8 - 13, 2012

Are you interested in the medical field and want to get a head start? Even if you don’t want to be a doctor or nurse this is the camp for you! Check out medicine’s many exciting careers with intensive studies on the heart, brain, skeletal, and nervous systems. Find out what we can learn from an EKG and blood pressure; study hematology and toxicology. Explore the importance of biomolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. This class includes dissections and a trip to a local veterinary hospital to watch live surgeries.

Adventures in Mobile Technology

Are you the next mobile app millionaire? Create your own apps for mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.)! Use the latest SDK to create games, movies, apps, videos, and more. Write, produce, and shoot short films or videos for distribution on multiple platforms. Use the latest software to create content for your apps. You don’t need to own a mobile device to participate in this camp, but if you have one, bring it.

Discover Japan

Join us on a journey to the world of classical and modern Japan. Study the richly unique Japanese culture and language, learn the beautiful art of Japanese calligraphy, create fascinating haiku poetry, and visit the Japanese Tea House on the Ball State Campus. Focus on grammar and vocabulary you can use in everyday life, sing Japanese songs, and enjoy Japanese cuisine. Develop an appreciation for the beauty and complexity of a culture that is becoming increasingly important in the United States and around the world.

The Science of Spaceflight

Why do rockets begin to tilt at an angle after they are launched? What makes an airplane fly? Study aerodynamics and propulsion to find out the answer to these questions and more! Find out how chemistry is used in space and learn about some of the famous space chemists. Launch mini-space shuttles and blow stuff up! Design, construct and test paper aircraft and canister rockets and use the laws of motion to make them go farther and faster! Create a space capsule that will safely land your egg-stronaut on an alien world.

Python Programming

Have you ever wanted to learn to program, but could not work it into your busy schedule? Specifically designed for adults with little or no previous programming experience, this course will cover the basics of Python Programming in just three days! The Python programming language is one of the latest super cool languages to learn. Python is a more interactive language that will allow the recreation of science experiments in the classrooms. Learn OOP (Object Oriented Programming) and basic procedure programming, learn to use basic variables, loops, if/else statements, strings, arrays, functions, basic input/output to files, and objects with visual graphics. Acquire these Python taming skills for fun, work, or to use in the classroom.

Lego Tales: Building a Story with Bricks

Introduction to Java Programming

Do you want to learn programming but can’t work it into your school schedule? This course is designed for students with little or no previous programming experience! Java programming is used in web design, gaming, writing apps for mobile devices, and much more! Learn to program using a top-down, structured, and object-oriented approach. Topics will include using basic variables, loops, if/else statements, strings, arrays, functions, basic input/output to files, using objects, and creating classes. If you want to take an AP computer Science course in the future, this course could give you the basics you need.

Educational Mentor Tutoring Program

The Indiana Academy is offering one-on-one tutoring sessions in math and science this summer. Each session will be tailored to meet your educational needs. Whether you need a little extra help in a subject or just want to work ahead, the Indiana Academy Educational Mentor Program can help. We will meet with you and your parent to discuss your educational needs and set up a schedule that works for you. Indiana Academy Educational Mentors are gifted and talented juniors and seniors from the Indiana Academy who excel in science and/or math. All tutoring sessions will be held in Burris classrooms.

Tutoring sessions are only $10 per hour and are for students in grades 5-9.

Traveling Summer Adventure Day Camps

Let the Indiana Academy bring a summer adventure to your school! We provide the instructor and supplies, you provide the classroom and the students. Day camps typically run Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to noon but times can be adjusted to meet the needs of your students. There are many themes to choose from and each camp can be tailored for any age group.

About the Indiana Academy

The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities, located on the campus of Ball State University (Google Maps), is Indiana's only public educational institution solely devoted to the education of gifted youth. To provide high ability students challenging and engaging experiences after the end of the school term, the Indiana Academy offers a wide variety of summer programs for students in grades 2 - 10. The focus of each session is to provide opportunities for the student to explore new topics and ideas, experience expert instruction, engage in hands-on actives and enjoy the challenge of learning.
 

Registration & Refund Policy

Camps are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Registration is limited to keep classes small and hands-on. There will be a non-refundable $50 registration fee. This fee must be mailed to us the same day you register online in order to hold your spot in the camp and will count towards the cost of the camp. After May 31, payment in full must be made to reserve a spot in the camp. This fee is refundable only if there is a medical condition which prevents the camper from coming and is documented by a physician or the camp is full. No refunds will be given less than three weeks before the camp without a note from a physician.
 

Room and Board for Residential Programs

Students will be housed in a dormitory on the campus of Ball Sate University. Counselors will be assigned to each floor and will live with the students for the duration of each program. A nurse will be available in the mornings and evenings to dispense medications to participants with health problems or special needs. Please let us know if your child has special dietary requirements (like vegetarianism or lactose intolerance) prior to their program date so we may make accommodations for them.
